Why I wrote The Power of Detours

I never imagined I would need another person’s heart to keep living—or face an amputation as part of my journey forward. I was a husband, a father, a coach, and a man accustomed to being strong for everyone else. Suddenly, I needed people to be strong for me. I had to receive the support I was used to giving and trust God through questions I could not answer.

I wrote The Power of Detours to take you beyond the words “heart transplant” and “amputation”—into the fear, the waiting, the prayers, and the moments when I had to surrender what I could no longer control. My family needed me, and I wanted more life with them. More time beside my wife. More opportunities to guide my children. More ordinary days that I now understood were extraordinary gifts. Learning to live again required more than physical recovery. It required honesty, help, and surrender.

That is why men’s health is so personal to me. As men, we often measure our strength by how much we provide, carry, and endure. But we must also make time to care for the man carrying it all. Schedule the appointment. Speak honestly about how you feel. Ask for support. Invest in your mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. You deserve care, and the people you love deserve the opportunity to keep sharing life with you.

I want men to understand that caring for themselves is part of caring for their families. Your presence matters beyond a paycheck, a title, or what you accomplish. We still have conversations to have, memories to make, and young people who need the wisdom only your journey can offer.

These pages hold the parts of my story you cannot see in a photograph. If life has taken you somewhere you never wanted to go, I invite you to walk through my detours with me—the Story, the Struggle, the Surrender, and the Significance.

You may come to read my story—and find the courage to keep living yours.

I am enjoying your book and am grateful for the reminder of the Power of Detours, especially since I, too, had an up-close-and-personal detour because of my brain injury.  Continue to shine your beautiful light ️! The world needs it!  Abundance always!

What if the boundaries your child resists today become the foundation they stand on tomorrow?

When Love Sounds Like a Whistle is a deeply personal look at the courage it takes to raise young people with love, discipline, and standards in a world that keeps lowering them.

Drawing from his journey as a father of three Division I athletes, husband, educator, and coach, Jamie Mahaffey takes readers beyond athletic achievement to the daily work of building character. Behind every opportunity are lessons about responsibility, sacrifice, faith, and the choices made when nobody is watching.

A whistle gets our attention. It interrupts what needs to change. In parenting, love sometimes must do the same—saying “no,” holding a boundary, having an uncomfortable conversation, and letting a young person work through a challenge while staying beside them.

This book asks parents, teachers, coaches, and mentors to examine their own example: Are we preparing young people for life, or repeatedly rescuing them from the lessons that preparation requires? Through honest family stories and practical lessons, Jamie explores how to lead consistently, correct with care, and give children both the support and accountability they need to grow.

At its heart is a conviction: our children need our presence, our example, and our willingness to uphold the standards we ask them to carry. The goal reaches beyond a scholarship, a starting position, or applause. It is a young person who can make wise decisions, honor commitments, and stand with integrity long after we leave the room.

Read it for the young person you love. Apply it to the example you set. Live it for the legacy you hope to leave.

“My life and my books carry one calling: to represent Christ through my story, struggle, surrender, and significance. Every page calls us to turn pain into purpose, lead our families with love and standards, and leave a legacy that gives the next generation strength to stand.”
